Palanca is a powerful word and a powerful force within the Cursillo Movement.  Ask any Cursillista and they will say the Palanca is what fuels the Holy Spirit’s fire on a Cursillo weekend. But to think of Palanca as merely a letter someone sends a candidate is to forget the true meaning of Palanca and to diminish its powers.             Palanca is a lever, not a letter, a lever that lifts candidates toward God by the prayers and sacrifices that are made for them.  Sometimes we lose sight of that lever and instead concentrate on the form in which we send that lever. Ask yourself if your letters have become what the Cursillo Movement’s Leader’s Manual call “friendship letters or good wishes”? When your letter is mostly filled with sentiments like the following, you are dismissing Palanca’s potential: “Have a wonderful time, wish I were there, I am praying for you and hoping you have a good weekend.”             Prayer and self denial are more effective than nice things in securing God’s Grace.  Better than any friendship letter is one that reveals your prayers and self-sacrifices.  “I will attend Mass for you each day during your weekend...I am denying myself desserts while you are there...I will rise an hour early and say the rosary...I have set aside one hour of TV to read the Bible each day while you are there.             Perhaps one of the most potent Palanca practices is to deny oneself the pleasure of writing to just one person and instead write a general Palanca letter to all participants.  There is less personal glory in a letter written to everyone, but isn’t sacrifice the object?  It is that kind of selfless sacrifice for unseen, unknown individuals that best represent what Palanca is all about.  Let’s resist giving the copied off stories and inspirational bookmarks that have become so common and get back to the true letters of definitive prayer and self-sacrifice that Palanca is meant to be.   (Taken from Palanca: It’s a lever, Not a letter by Patricia Crowley, Dec/Jan 2001 Ultreya Magazine) CHAPEL PALANCA You can help without leaving town!  Since our Cursillo weekends are being held at Sand Hills Bible Camp we have decided to ask Cursillistas to do Chapel Palanca in your home parish.  Please consider committing to an hour or more with the Blessed Sacrament.  Pray for the success of the Cursillo Weekend and pray for those giving witness that they may have the patience, courage and wisdom that they need to let the Holy Spirit work through them during their Witness Talks.  We are inviting all of you to commit to spending an hour in prayer during the Men’s Cursillo the weekend Thursday, March 1st  through Sunday, March 4th.  On Thursday the team will begin meeting at 4 p.m. and on Sunday the closing is at 3 p.m.  Don’t forget that you are all invited for the closing Mass and dinner.  The Women’s Cursillo is the weekend of Thursday, March 15th through Sunday, March 18th and will run the same hours with closing at 3 p.m.
