A Little History on Camp Corbett
Formerly Gibson’s Resort on Big Elbow Lake, east of Waubun, Minnesota, Camp Corbett consists of nine acres, with
1,400 feet of shoreline, a lodge and six cabins. It was purchased by the Diocese of Crookston in 1973 and the name
was changed to honor the first prelate of our Diocese, Bishop Timothy Corbett. The Priests’ Senate, which had
discussed the purchase of lake shore property, saw a number of uses for the new campground. It could be used for
religious education camping programs, meetings of the parish or area leaders, parish picnics or for married couple’s
retreats.
In addition to the cabins, the grounds have adequate space for tents or campers. There is also a central facility for
cooking and dining and meetings, as well as a chapel. Over the years, improvements have been made, mostly by the
very people who spent time there either with a youth group or their families. Still, the camp is largely considered rustic
in nature.

A generous anonymous donation given recently to the
diocese for Camp Corbett is leading the way to additional
improvements!
The decision has been made to rennovate the bathroom building,
which would include making the building handicap accessible and
provide showers and dressing spaces. In a letter to the “Friends of
Camp Corbett,”
Msgr. David Baumgartner, Vicar General of the Diocese of
Crookston, notes:
“There are several ways to make an important donation to Camp
Corbett. We would like to raise an additional $10,000 to assure that
the bathroom building can be built this spring. Building product
donations can reduce the overall cost of the project. Skilled
tradesmen to raise the building will produce a labor of love.”
And of course, cash donations are needed as well.
Please consider helping us improve Camp Corbett with a donation of money, time or resources.....
